Fight with deputy leads to charges

MARS HILL, Maine — A local man has been charged following a fight with a deputy sheriff Sunday.

The incident occurred the evening of Feb. 8 when Sheriff’s Sgt. Matt Cummings went to 21 Silver St. in Mars Hill to arrest a female on an outstanding warrant.
“When the deputy arrived, he learned the female was not at the home, but Aaron Jones, 37, was there. Jones is on bail for trafficking in synthetic hallucinogens (bath salts) and conditions of his bail require him to allow law enforcement to search him for drugs at anytime,” said Sheriff Darrell Crandall, of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office.
Crandall said Cummings was concerned Jones might have drugs because he was acting strange.
“Jones refused to be searched and Sgt. Cummings told him he was under arrest for violating his bail conditions. Jones resisted arrest and a physical altercation ensued,” said the sheriff.
Crandall said Jones, who is 6-foot 2-inchestall and 240 pounds, was ultimately subdued with a taser and handcuffed.
“Neither the deputy nor Jones was seriously injured in the scuffle. Jones is charged with violation of conditions of release, refusing to submit to arrest and assault. Evidence of drug possession was seized from Jones, and additional charges may follow, pending laboratory analysis,” said Crandall.
Jones remains in the county jail in Houlton. He is scheduled to appear in Presque Isle District Court on April 8.
