New start time for Houlton schools

HOULTON, Maine — The time that classes will start for students at Houlton Middle-Senior High School has been pushed back by 10 minutes for the remainder of the school year.

Parents were notified of the change through the district’s automated alert system over the weekend.
“We needed to make adjustments to the schedule to arrange logistics in the school day,” RSU 29 Superintendent Mike Hammer said. “There will be no change in busing, parents can drop their students off at the same time or 10 minutes later and they will still go to either the cafeteria or for sixth grade a place away from the high school students.”
Hammer said Principal Marty Bouchard was slated to meet with the sixth-grade teaching staff Tuesday to decide where those students would gather. Potential locations where those students could gather include the school’s small gymnasium, a designated hallway, individual classrooms or outside once the weather changes.
This later start time also affects Houlton Southside School, but parents won’t see any change, as the extra time will simply be added to the student’s morning recess, Hammer added.
