100 Years Ago-Mar. 3, 1915
Aroostook Times
J.P. Morgan Jr. tours county — James Brown of Brown Brothers of New York and H. P. Binney of Boston, accompanied by J.P. Morgan (Jr.) of New York, who is connected with the Boston Brown Bros. office, made a trip over a portion of the Bangor & Aroostook lines. The party went as far north as Van Buren and, on the return, made an inspection of the company’s new hotel at Oakfield.

News from Ludlow — Carleton Hemore, who has been at work for P. J. Garcelon in Smyrna Mills, returned home Thursday. The H.F. Andrews Co. has closed their business here and taken their horses and sleds to Bangor.

Robert Palmer: A long history in Houlton — Robert A. Palmer, who as oldest resident of Houlton holds the Boston Post cane, reaches his 92nd milestone today. Born in 1848, he came to town as a young man, and through his lifetime has seen roads built, the Canadian Pacific Railroad constructed and the telephone become a common luxury. Mr. Palmer planned and laid out the beautiful Monument Park and acted as its caretaker until a few years ago.
Fire destroys Callnan home — Fire of undetermined origin Wednesday afternoon destroyed the house belonging to William J. Callnan located on the Woodstock road at the top of Garrison Hill. The two-family dwelling was built during the summer of 1939 at a cost of about $3,000.

Home improvement — Advertised in this week’s issue: cherry-grained panels by Masonite, 25 cents per sq. ft. at Fogg’s; lined plastic drapes, 77 cents each at Woolworth’s; and classic color glaze antiquing kit, $4.95 each at Sherwin-Williams.
Fire season — Fires in Houlton and Bridgewater have resulted in the loss of two potato houses. The loss in Bridgewater was estimated at $67,000 to the warehouse of Arlo Bradstreet and Ralph Stackpole; no estimate was readily available for the fire Saturday at the Houlton farm of Donald Hagan.

Troop 156 thanks supporters — Houlton Cub Scout Pack 156 held its annual Blue and Gold banquet Sunday where a spaghetti supper was prepared by assistant cubmaster Al “Brown Bear” Cowperthwaite’s family. Recognized for support were: cubmaster Tom Johnson, Jim McPartland of the Houlton Lodge of Elks for use of their bowling lanes, Mike Clark representing Houlton Rotary for troop sponsorship, and Dean York of the Church of the Good Shepherd for providing a monthly meeting place.
