Caribou shivers toward record-breaking cold

10 years ago

   CARIBOU, Maine — If temperatures stay this cold, Caribou may have its coldest February since the National Weather Service started keeping daily temperature records in Caribou going back to Jan. 1, 1939.
According to information provided by the National Weather Service Office in Caribou, the average temperature as of Monday for the month was 2.3 degrees — which is 10.8 degrees below normal.
Meteorologists with the weather service are forecasting temperatures through the end of the month that would support that 2.3 degree average.
The top five coldest months on record in caribou are:
• January of 1994, with a monthly average of negative 0.7 degrees;
• January of 1957, averaging 1.3 degrees;
• January of 2009, averaging 2.5 degrees;
• December of 1989, at 3.5 degrees; and
• February of 1993, at 4.1 degrees.
