While the general open enrollment period for 2015 health coverage is over, those who qualify may still be able to obtain benefits, local officials said.
“Health insurance plans in the Marketplace can be very affordable,” explained Dawn Roberts, health care navigator and community education specialist at the Aroostook County Action Program (ACAP).
“A family of two can make up to $62,920 and still receive a premium tax credit to help pay insurance premiums. Over 74,000 Maine residents enrolled or re-enrolled in a plan this year,” Roberts said.
For most people, the last day to enroll in a 2015 Marketplace plan was Feb. 15. In some cases, however, individuals may still be able to get coverage this year. Those who have certain life changes such as having a baby, getting married, or losing health coverage may qualify for a special enrollment period.
ACAP is part of the Community Action Navigator Consortium and is a partner in a statewide network of certified Health Insurance Marketplace Navigators. Navigators can provide free in-person assistance to help people apply for and enroll in coverage through the Marketplace.
“We are not affiliated with any insurance company, so we provide fair and unbiased advice,” Roberts said. “Navigators can help you access programs that could lower your monthly health premiums and out-of pocket costs and understand the options available to you. Your private information is protected and we will never share it with anybody.”
Those who don’t have qualifying health coverage in 2015 will need to pay a fee. The fee for not having coverage in 2015 is $395 per adult, up to $885 or 2 percent of household income, whichever is higher.
