Editor’s note: The following article is a synopsis written by staff members and volunteers of the Cary Public Library highlighting one of the suggested reading books, as determined by their staff.
It seems rather humorous to review even a children’s book about golf with snowbanks as high as 10 feet or more; but it is a delightful story and we can dream about greener lands… “Julia’s Magic Putter” by Page O’Brien Jasinski with illustrations by Peggy Lindt features wonderfully funny dogs, birds, squirrels, rabbits and geese as they traipse over the golf course.
Julia loses her favorite putter and when she can’t find it, tries many other models without much success. Many other golfers offer advice. Julia’s golf teacher has her thinking about the “magic” inside her, which Julia can’t see because she firmly believes her success in the golf game comes from the magic of the putter.
Old Captain Swift advises Julia she has magic in her eyes and smile and when something dearly loved becomes lost she can always carry it in her heart.
Well, the putter was found, used as a walking stick, and there is the happy ending as Julia decides she does have magic inside her as do we all with unique personal gifts no one else can claim.
This book was one presented in memory of an ardent golfer to Cary Library and is easily read in one setting to dogs, golf lovers, and children in need of fun or a boost. Happy dreams of green grass and warm breezes!
