Salvation Army ministry to continue following death of commander

HOULTON, Maine — While The Salvation Army mourns the sudden passing of its Houlton Corps Commanding Officer, Major David Wetzel, social services and religious activities will continue to take place at the organization’s facilities at 12 Court St.

Major Wetzel, who assumed command of the Houlton Corps on July 1, 2014, died unexpectedly in the Salvation Army building after a recent illness. His body was found by Houlton police Feb. 19 after they were called to the Court Street building for a “well-being” check.
Salvation Army officials stated in a press release that while his leadership and compassionate spirit will be missed by those who sought physical and spiritual comfort at The Salvation Army, there are no plans to curtail assistance to the Houlton community.
“I am greatly saddened at the sudden passing of Major Wetzel,” said Major James LaBossiere, divisional commander for The Salvation Army’s Northern New England Division. “In the brief time he ministered in Houlton, the major made a positive impact on the community. We will honor his ministry until we are able to find a successor.”
Social services and Sunday worship services will be coordinated and administered by The Salvation Army’s Divisional Headquarters in Portland.
Normal hours for assistance at The Salvation Army in Houlton are Mon/Tues/Thurs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. to noon.  Sunday worship services are held at 11 a.m.
