It’s the people who make Planet Head Day a success
To the editor:
I have collected these pictures because they are really telling special stories of what Planet Head Day and C-A-N-C-E-R are really all about.
Nadine Beckwith, who lives in Garfield and works in Ashland, approached me last year at TAMC’s Health Fair and asked me if she could have her head shaved in support of C-A-N-C-E-R and all that it does. I was surprised because that was a first for me. No one ever approached me months before asking about information like this and could she?
All of what Nadine has to say about us is very heart warming. She has gone around town since PHD and has been told personal stories about how C-A-N-C-E-R has helped people. Small town USA, and she has managed to be our second highest fund raiser.
Just recently I found out Nadine has cancer in her family. She never told me that. Nadine said that’s true, but it was more of a bigger picture, wanting to help us and help others.
Pastor Merritt Durost from Easton’s Pentecostal Church decided to pay back this year and be there to help support all those recently diagnosed or who are in treatment for cancer. Merritt has been and still is on that road still being monitored, and watched as he still goes through the process. He is the husband of Amanda Durost, hair stylist who works at Great Beginnings and has been with us every year shaving heads.
These are the stories that really should be told. They would really help all those that are watching, and reading, who are survivors, or are having their heads shaved because of some family or friend or because they care and want to be supportive. I know the feeling – it’s why I had my head shaved. So many others out there also know and each year new people come and join in. These are the people that bring hope and support to those out there that are now in treatment, helping them to not feel so alone. We’re all on this road together and we need to be there knowing none of us are ever really alone. There is always someone who cares.
