First comes “Sam and Dave Dig a Hole.” Little boys love to dig holes, so Sam and Dave did just that. And what a great hole they dug along with their dog who decided to help. All three diggers were looking for something spectacular. Fortified with chocolate milk and animal crackers, they progress nicely,

but a real surprise just simply eludes the boys. Even changing directions doesn’t help. Sam and Dave are not quitters; they only run out of steam and fall asleep. Then guess who finds something spectacular! Written by Mac Barnett with illustrations by Jon Klassen. Both the story and the pictures are unique, sparse, yet the dog bears watching closely. Fun for the little ones who love “to read” by remembering the storyline from an adult’s earlier read-aloud.
Second on our list this week has Maine ties with both author Stephanie Calmenson and illustrator Jennifer Thermes. “There Are No Moose on This Island.” Dad is so busy with his guidebook and binoculars he misses the wandering moose every time, but Jake is so aware! This book has ‘search and find,’ rhymes and ever so many little details on the dreamy pages to interest children. A trip on a boat to reach an island, ants in Dad’s pants, and it all began with the author’s visit to Isle au Haut. We love books centered in Maine as they build pride and awareness of the home state at an early age.
Enjoy these two new additions to the Children’s Library, and as always: “Happy reading to everyone.”
