2015 is set to be a fun-filled year for the town of Easton. The year kicked off with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club.
The anniversary date fell on Feb. 24, with the Sesquicentennial Committee and Easton School Department putting on quite a show. The assembly included two musical numbers (“The Maine Song” and “The County Song”) by grades four, five and six, accompanied by Donna Corey on piano, Wendi Malenfant on bass guitar and Jadon Ellison violin. Some interesting facts on the history of Easton were presented by grade 4 students and the entire school community sang “Happy Birthday” to Easton. The Sesquicentennial Committee treated all the students (pre-K through 12) to cake and a T-shirt with the group’s logo.
On the evening of March 6, the committee put on a community birthday party in collaboration with the Recreation Committee’s Winter Carnival. The event included a pizza party, bounce houses, face painting, four-square, Anah Temple Klowns, live photo booth, a cribbage tournament and of course more birthday cake! The winner of the cribbage tourney was Paul Dudley.
The weekend continued the celebration in Easton, with a sliding party on Kinney Hill; thanks to the Snowmobile Club for the countless rides up the hill in the groomer. There was also a community potluck supper and father-son basketball game.
Busse recognized
Christopher Busse, an 8th grader at Easton Junior/Senior High School, has been notified by the National Geographic Society that he is one of the semifinalists eligible to compete in the 2015 Maine National Geographic State Bee, sponsored by Google and Plum Creek. The contest will be held at the University of Maine at Farmington on Friday, March 27. Chris is the son of Michael and Kyla Legassie and William Busse.
This is the second level of the National Geographic Bee competition, which is now in its 27th year. School bees were held in schools for fourth- through eighth-grade students throughout the state to determine each school champion. School champions then took a qualifying test, which they submitted to the National Geographic Society. The National Geographic Society has invited up to 100 of the top-scoring students in each of the 50 states to compete in the state Bees.
Each state champion will receive $100, the “National Geographic Atlas of the World, 10th Edition,” a medal, and a trip to Washington, D.C., to represent their state in the National Geographic Bee Championship to be held at National Geographic Society headquarters, May 11-13. The national champion will receive a $50,000 college scholarship and lifetime membership in the Society. The national champion will also travel (along with one parent or guardian), all expenses paid, to the Galápagos Islands, where he/she will experience geography firsthand through up-close encounters with the islands’ unique wildlife and landscapes. National Geographic Channel and Nat Geo WILD will air the 2015 National Geographic Bee Championship final round, moderated by award-winning journalist Soledad O’Brien, on Friday, May 15, at 8 p.m. ET. The final round will be aired later on public television stations. Check local television listings for air date and time in your area.
All-Star Basketball Classic
The All-Star basketball game was held on March 5 at Caribou High School. Representing Easton for the boys were EHS seniors Connor Burtt, Nick Clark and Cody Halvorson. The boys were coached by Steve Shaw, also of Easton. Hannah Ferris, Kalie Ward and Kylee Carter were named to the girls’ team. Congratulations to all the representatives!
PTO announces penny march
Starting March 1, the PTO will hold its annual penny march to celebrate Easton’s 150th birthday! Totals will be announced weekly, with each grade total divided by the number of students in the class. Bonus points will be offered for money that does not have to be rolled by the PTO — meaning dollar bills, checks and coins already rolled. Please do not feel you need to cash in money at the bank to send in pennies! If you would like to make a donation, call Easton Elementary School at 488-7700.
Happy Days Club
The Easton Happy Days Senior Citizen Club met on Thursday, Feb. 26, for a potluck lunch with 10 members and two guests present. Their guests, Kristi St. Peter and Ginette Pitre from Professional Home Nursing, spoke on services they provide and also discussed dementia/Alzheimers. The next meeting will be a potluck lunch at the Manor, at 1130 a.m., on Thursday, March 12. Seniors, come and bring a friend.
Exercise classes
Heidi from LiveWell United is bring “Cardio Mash-Up” to Easton Elementary School on Tuesdays and Thursday at 5:30 p.m., starting March 3. For more information email heidi@livewellunited.com.

The New Song Church has installed emergency strobe lights in the event their furnace(s) are not operating. If you see the lights flashing, call the Lambs at 551-6223 or 551-6224. They appreciated your assistance.
Craft Fair date change
There will be a craft, vendor and trash n’ treasure sale at Easton Elementary School on Saturday, April 4, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Setup time will be available on Friday from 6-9 p.m. Anyone interested in having a spot, call Melissa at 227-4093 or email crazycountygirl96@gmail.com.
Kiwanis meetings
The Kiwanis Club of Easton meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 6-7 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall; everyone is welcome to attend. Dinner provided for a small fee. Please plan to join them.
Senior field trip
The Easton senior group will travel to Sugar Moon Cookhouse, Divide, N.B. on Tuesday, March 17, for an all-you-can-eat breakfast (for lunch) including pancakes, eggs, bacon, sausage, baked beans, coffee, juice and tea. The cost is $12, which includes taxes, a tour and taffy. Participants must have either their passport/passport card or a driver’s license and birth certificate to cross the border. Departing from the Manor at 9:45 a.m. All area seniors are welcome!

Wednesday, March 11 — Junior Activities 9:30-11 a.m. at the Hall. Bigrock field trip from 3-6 p.m.
Thursday, March 12 — Happy Days Club meets at 11:30 a.m. in the recreation room at the Manor. Birthday party after school for all Easton youth, celebrating the Girl Scouts’ 103rd birthday. Group will meet at the Hall until 4:15 p.m. Cardio mash-up Exercise class from 5:30-6:30 in elementary school gym.
Friday, March 13 — Junior Activities 9:30-11 a.m. at the Hall. Seniors’ St. Patty’s Day luncheon at the Manor starting at 11:15 a.m. The cost is $3. Little Bears cheerleading party after school at the Hall until 4 p.m.; uniforms must be turned ithen.
Little Bears grades 1 and 2 at Mars Hill Winterfest. The game will be at 5:15 p.m. at CAHS (please note the change in time).
Monday, March 16 — Sr. Nutrition class at the Manor beginning at 11 a.m. The cost is $3. After-school cooking at the Hall until 4:15 p.m. Weight Watchers’ meeting at 5:30 p..m. at the elementary school library.
