AARP Fraud Watch: IRS will not call you on the phone

Fraudsters saying they are from the IRS are calling people claiming they owe back taxes. They demand immediate payment using a prepaid debit card or a wire transfer. They may threaten you with arrest or the loss of your driver’s license.

Some scammers spoof an IRS phone number on your caller ID or give fake IRS badge numbers. Don’t fall for it. If you do legitimately owe taxes, the IRS will send you a letter, not make an abusive phone call.
Be a fraud fighter! If you can spot a scam, you can stop a scam.
