The 14th annual Mars Hill and Blaine Winterfest will be held this year on March 13-15. The schedule will include the following events:
Friday, March 13, Turkey Dinner from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the CAHS cafeteria. Cost is $8, $5 for age 10 and under. Pre-ordered Shut-in meals will delivered by calling Kathy at 425-3771 by 4 p.m. on March 6. Sponsored by the Mars Hill Rotary Club.
A Silent Auction will be held during the supper to benefit the CAHS Youth in Government Class.
Youth basketball games will be held in the CAHS gym beginning at 4 p.m. when the Mars Hill and Easton grades 1 and 2 take to the court, followed by the Rec Center grades 1 and 2 games. Next will be the Grade 5 and 6 girls taking on their moms, followed by the grade 5 and 6 boys pitted against their dads.
Saturday, March 14, will begin bright and early at CAHS with the Saint Patrick’s Day breakfast sponsored by the Mars Hill and Blaine Community Club from 6-9 a.m. The meal includes bacon, eggs and all the fixin’s for $5 per plate. There will also be two raffles of gift certificates held.
At 9 a.m. at Fort Street Elementary School, registration will begin for the Lucky Leprechaun 5K. sponsored by After The Bell and Araya Wellness; cost is $5 each or $20 per family.
At CAHS, at 7 a.m., a Bake Sale will be set up in the lobby sponsored by the Mars Hill Full Gospel Assembly.
From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at CAHS, a Penny Carnival, sponsored by the Senior Class, will be held for $5 per ticket. This will include a Bounce House, Shrine Klowns, and a Cake Walk will also be offered ($1 per play with proceeds going to the APC Sunday School).
A Cribbage Tournament will be held beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the music room. The entry fee is $5 and you are asked to bring your boards. FMI, call Dana Crory at 425-7991.
Helicopter Rides will be offered from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (weather permitting). Cost will be $40 per person for a 10 -to-15-minute ride.
A lunch will be offered by the Senior Class beginning at 10 a.m. The menu will include hot dog, chips and drink for $5, baked potato for $3, loaded potato for $5, chips or soda for $1 each.
Bingo with cash prizes will be played from noon to 2:30 p.m. in the music room, sponsored by the Presque Isle Elks.
A Talent Show, sponsored by the Junior Class, will be presented at 4:30 p.m. at the Mars Hill and Blaine Community Center. Cost is $3 for adults, $2 for students. Free for age 5 and under. Pizza, hot dogs, snacks and soda will be available. A 50/50 will also be done.
At Bigrock, the following events will be held:
Night Skiing from 4-8 p.m., with $5 lift tickets and $15 rentals. A Mini Luge Race will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a $10 entry fee. A Ham Supper will be offered from 5-7 p.m. for $12 per person. A Moonlight Guided Snowshoe Hike will begin at 6 p.m. (bring your own snowshoes and flashlight for a one-mile loop).
Music by Between Dead Stations (blues) will be played in the Pub from 7-10 p.m.
A Fire Twirling Performance by Chris Swiatek will be at 7 p.m., a Glow Light Parade will be at 8:15 p.m. (lineup at the lift at 7:45 p.m.) and Fireworks by Central Maine Pyrotechnics, sponsored by the town of Mars Hill will follow at 8:30 p.m.
On Sunday, March 15, Bigrock will serve an All-You-Can-Eat Breakfast Buffet from 8-10 a.m. for $10 each. This will be followed at 10 a.m. by the Bigrock Invitational Youth Ski Race.
Mark your calendar for this fun weekend of events — there is something for everyone to enjoy! Keep your eyes open for flyers at various places around town.
Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday, March 3, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The special speaker was Dave Hentosh of Smoldering Lake Outfitters in Bridgewater.
Dave spoke about the progression and changes that have happened to Kicking Bear over the five years he has been involved. The first year saw 50-70 kids and adults taking part in activities, while the last couple of years has seen that number grow to between 240 and 250.
Last year was held in the fall and was done on a Saturday with members of the Wounded Warriors on hand to take part. It was a huge success and was beneficial to all who attended.
In addition to Kicking Bear and the archery shooting, tomahawk throwing and games that take place, Smoldering Lake does various activities throughout the year with smaller groups that include goose banding (done in July when the geese are flightless), ice fishing, BB gun shooting (in an enclosed range) and more.
While the kids and adults that attend all these activities enjoy the physical outings and fun, the main reason to hold these events is to introduce the Lord Jesus Christ into the lives of all involved.
Library news
For the safety of the patrons, the Walter T.A. Hansen Memorial Library will be closed for a few weeks while the ceiling and lighting replacement is being implemented. We apologize for this inconvenience and look forward to seeing everyone when the library reopens.
Aroostook Health Center
Upcoming events for the week of March 11-17 include: Wednesday will feature the Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Morning Stretch at 9:30 a.m. and Crossword Puzzle Challenge at 1:30 p.m. Thursday will feature Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Bingo at 9:30 a.m., Horse Racing at 1:30 p.m. and Blaine Free Baptist at 6:30 p.m. Friday will feature Pokeno at 9:30 a.m. and Karaoke with Larry and Larry at 1:30 p.m. Saturday will be a free day. Sunday will feature the Full Gospel Assemble at 3 p.m. Monday will feature Morning Stretch at 9:30 a.m., Nail Beautiful at 10 a.m., Cooking Class at 1:30 p.m. and Gospel Group at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday is St. Patrick’s Day and will feature the Beauty Parlor at 8:30 a.m., Bingo at 9:30 a.m. and St Patrick’s Day Social at 1:30 p.m. All of these activities are subject to change. Bingo
The William Cousins Post 118 of Mars Hill is hosting Bingo every Saturday evening from 7 p.m., until done. There are cash prizes. Refreshments are available. Come on out and enjoy a fun evening with friends!
After the Bell
On Wednesday, March 11, the Running Club will meet at the high school, led by Coach Andy Grass from 6-7 p.m.
On Thursday, March 12, Session 1 of the Running Club will end. Practice will be outside at Fort Street Elementary from 2:30-3:30 p.m., led by Jonathan Kelly.
On Friday, March 13, there will be a St. Patrick’s Day party at After The Bell’s Main Street location after school until 4 p.m. Games, snacks, treats and more will be enjoyed as participants celebrate all things green. Children need a note sent to school and $3/child to attend.
On Saturday, March 14, the kids will put their skills to the test as they participate in the Lucky Leprechaun. Children will run the 5K course or the one-mile. Running Club members run for free. Those interested in running with the kids can join at Fort Street Elementary. Registration is at 9 a.m., race starts at 10 a.m. The race will start and end at Fort Street. Cost $/10 adult. On Monday, March 16, and Wednesday, March 18, After The Bell and Healthy Aroostook will take part in Kick Butts Day. Young people will serve as detectives in the community after completing their training with ACAP. No cost.
Snowshoe outing
On Saturday night at 6 o’clock, After The Bell will again be hosting the moonlit snowshoe hike at Bigrock. Meet at the lodge at 6. This is a one-mile loop, bring snowshoes and a headlamp/flashlight. Snowshoes are available by request ahead of time by calling Jamie at 694-1320. No cost.
