Influenza on the rise — A great many people are confined to their homes with the prevailing grippe epidemic, which comes on very suddenly and makes a person feel like the proverbial, “30 cents,” during its run.
New ‘species’ of chocolates — Millars Store is advertising “Something new, just received, Two new species of chocolate goods — chocolate covered Marsh Mallows and chocolate covered Whipped Cream” in addition to their other handmade specialties: dipped caramel, old-fashioned molasses candy, almond nougats, cocoanut snowflakes.

The business of the town — In the briefest town meeting in many years, Houlton voters Tuesday appropriated $206,346 to carry on the business of the town for the ensuing year. In addition, on Monday voters approved Daylight Savings Time and gave permission for Sunday movies to be shown in Houlton.
Signs of spring — From the editor’s “Thoughts and Afterthoughts” column: A fellow in a barbershop window repairing a fishing reel, seeds on display in local hardware stores, women showing increased interest in millinery merchandise, cars laying sheets of water across sidewalks and children playing marbles.

New State Guard unit — “B” Company of the 2nd Battalion, 314th Infantry Regiment of the Maine State Guard will be activated in a meeting, Friday, March 26, at the National Guard Armory in Houlton. It is hoped enough interest will be shown so that one platoon each can be formed for Monticello, Island Falls and Houlton.

Policeman’s Ball to raise funds — The Houlton Police Department is sponsoring a public Policeman’s Memorial Ball at the Knights of Columbus Hall on May 12 to benefit the Maine Law Enforcement Officers Memorial to be erected in Augusta. The granite monument will list the names of all law enforcement officers who have given their lives in the line of duty.
