‘Mews and Yips’ from the Central Aroostook Humane Society
By Gail Wieder
Board Member
I am one of the board members of the Central Aroostook Humane Society and also the coordinator for the Friends of CAHS, a group of people that help the board members with various fund-raising projects.
We usually meet four times a year at the Presque Isle library at 6 p.m. on the designated day; meetings usually only last about 30 minutes. We discuss ways to help the shelter come up with different projects or events to raise money for shelter expenses. The next meeting is planned for Tuesday, March 24.
Over the last few years the group has dwindled down to just a few dedicated people. We would like to get the word out there that we would like to get more people to join this group. Everyone is welcome to come to the meetings; if you love animals and helping them, then this is for you. If you have some time to give, please come to the next meeting and see if this is something you would like to be a part of. If you are under 16 we ask that you have an adult with you.
The events that we have are usually at the craft fairs where we have a table set up and sell items, usually in two-hour shifts. We also like to do a car wash in the summer months. May or June is when we have our Paws for the Cause Walk. In November we have our annual Toast to the Animals. The board members rely on our volunteers to help out at all these events; we are always in need of many volunteers.
Please think about becoming a member of the Friends of CAHS. I will keep you updated with emails when the meetings are scheduled and any upcoming events. If you would like to join or want more info, please email me at gail.wieder@yahoo.com.
Thought I would end this with something I read the other day — made me smile and made my heart happy.
Sincerity is a virtue, it’s said, and is anything more sincere than a canine smile? Reflections of a dog’s honest heart and capacity for joy, these smiles remind us that reveling in the moment and sharing that pleasure with our companions are surefire ways to happiness.
If you are considering a friend for life, come see us at the Central Aroostook Humane Society or check us out at petfinders.com and Facebook. Our hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closing for lunch noon to 12:30 p.m. Please remember to be responsible, spay and neuter your pets!
