Big East honors local players

The Big East Basketball Conference recently announced its post-season award winners and statistical leaders for the 2014-15 season.
Those players were recognized Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015 at the Big East senior all-star games played at Old Town High School.
Presque Isle Wildcat senior guard Hannah Graham and senior forward Krystal Kingsbury of Presque Isle were named to the first team, joining Player of the Year Sierra Tapley of Mount Desert Island and Kelsey Shaw and Sarah Phelps, both of the Trojans.
The second team consisted of Lauren Martin of Old Town, Madison Card of Ellsworth, Maegan True of John Bapst, Shelby Caron of Hermon and Madison Chadbourne of Foxcroft Academy, with Crystal Bell of John Bapst and Emily Berry of Ellsworth making honorable mention.
MDI’s Brent Barker was selected as Coach of the Year and Foxcroft Academy received the sportsmanship banner.
Local players receiving special awards were: scholar athlete, Morgan Outing of Caribou and Taylor Williams of Presque Isle; Paul Soucy Spirit Award, Simona Amerio of Caribou and Erin Ackerson of Presque Isle; and defensive award, Bria Judd of Caribou and Kingsbury of PI.
Statisically, Graham and Kingsbury were first and second in scoring, averaging 16.6 and 16.5 points per game, respectively. Graham led the Big East by averaging 4.3 assists, while teammates Williams (3.4) and Emily Wheaton (2.8) also in the top 10 in the category.
Presque Isle had four of the top six players in the league in three-point field goal percentage. Williams was second at 45.8 percent, Graham third at 44.2, Emily Lagerstrom fifth at 41.6 and Olivia Hudson sixth at 40.
Madison Doucette of Caribou was sixth in steals with 2.4 per game and Graham was 10th with two per contest.
Kingsbury was the fifth best foul shooter at 69.3 percent. For field goal percentage, Graham led the way at 62.1 percent, with Kingsbury third at 58.8, Nelson seventh at 52.2 and Wheaton ninth at 49.1.
For the boys, senior guard Dayne Savage of Caribou made the first team and was joined by Old Town’s Eric Hoogterp and Adam Richardson, Hermon’s Tyler Beaton and Player of the Year Hunter Smith of Foxcroft Academy.
Junior guard Donovan Savage of Caribou was named to the second team, with Nick Bagley and Bruce St. Peter, both of Ellsworth; Joe Plummer of Hermon and Riley Swanson of MDI others on the second team. Ben Buckley of Presque Isle garnered honorable mention along with Bryce Harmon of Ellsworth.

Mark Reed of Hermon and Brian McDormand of Old Town shared Coach of the Year honors and John Bapst received the team sportsmanship award.
Special awards went to the following: scholar athlete, Donovan Savage of Caribou and Chase Norton of Presque Isle; Paul Soucy Spirit Award, Dustin Bouchard of Caribou and Kyle Nadeau of Presque Isle; and defensive award, Colby Holdsworth of Caribou and Kyle Rider of Presque Isle.
In conference stats, Dayne Savage was third in scoring at 15.9 points per game and Donovan Savage 10th with a 10.3 per game clip.
Dayne Savage was fourth in assists at 3.1 per game, while Donovan Savage was eight with a 2.3 per game average. Presque Isle’s Griffin Guerrette was 10th with 1.9 per contest.
Buckley of the Wildcats was the second-leading rebounder in the conference, averaging 7.3 per game. Caribou’s Holdsworth was 10th with a 4.5 per game average.
Presque Isle’s Norton was the only County player to place among the top 10 in three-point field goal accuracy. He was 10th with a 32.4 percentage.
Dayne Savage was first in steals per game at 2.6, with Donovan Savage third at two per game.
Donovan Savage was second at 82.6 percent and Dayne Savage third at 82.3 in free throw percentage, with Holdsworth fifth  at 74.4.
