Live models — The first fashion show in Houlton ever given on living models was held at Newell’s millinery parlors on Friday afternoon and evening. The store was decorated most artistically while 12 models walked back and forth, showing off the spring and summer hat styles.

Bread eaters beware — The advertisement reads” “Beware of Bread that contains Plaster of Paris! Use Campbell’s homemade bread that is 100 percent pure. Campbell’s Domestic Bakery, Court Street, Houlton.

Super-starchy potato — The Aroostook Potato Products Co. is now experimenting on a type of potato with a starch content so high as to make it inedible but highly desirable from which to extract starch for market, according to Houlton plant manager, Earl Pierson.
Cold, stormy Easter — Easter came to town (Sunday, March 24) in the coldest storm of the season. The high winds swirled snow in faces of churchgoers and piled drifts high, blocking roads in many places. About 12 inches of snow fell in the vicinity.

New post office for Sherman Mills — Sen. Edmund Muskie and Rep. William D. Hathaway have been informed that a new post office is to be built in Sherman Mills, with the new building near the present one on Main Street. It will have 800 square feet of interior space.

Spring savings — The C & G Foodliner lists the following grocery specials this week: center cut pork chops, 78 cents per lb.; navel oranges, 77 cents per dozen; IGA coffee, 69 cents per lb. and tuna, 4 cans for $1.00.

President Bush, ‘Try our broccoli’ — Sen. Bill Cohen (R-Maine) today called on President Bush to find room in his heart for the “kinder and gentler” broccoli grown in Aroostook County. Maine is now the fifth largest broccoli producer in the nation with 3,000 acres, valued at $4.5 million.
Bither’s Fashions celebrates 25 years — Celebrating 25 years this month in the women’s fashion retail business on Main Street in Houlton, Mildred McIntosh of Bither’s Fashions attributes her success to quality, personal service, select merchandise and the joy of work.
