GRAY – Jacqueline G. Chandler, 93, of Gray, passed away March 13, 2015, at home, with family by her side. She was born in Farmington on May 6, 1921, to Clinton W. and Lora Gould Greenwood. Her grandfather was Chester Greenwood, the inventor of ear protectors.
Jac grew up in Farmington and a variety of small Maine towns where her father taught school. She attended Farmington State Normal School and graduated from the University of Maine in 1942 with a B.S. in Education, and in 1969 with a Masters in Education. In June 1944, she married S. Hobart “Chub” Chandler of Caribou.
In Maine, she taught at Orono and Newport high schools immediately after graduation. Later, she taught English at Dover Area and York Suburban high schools in Penn-sylvania, retiring in 1981. Jac and Chub returned to Maine in their retirement, where she enjoyed gardening, reading, knitting, quilting, basket-making and a variety of other crafts, as well as wildlife watching and breakfasts at Cole Farms.
She is survived by her daughter, Deborah of New Gloucester; son, Douglas and his wife, Molly; granddaughters Tessa Chandler and Jessi Kling of York, PA; as well as by her sister, Joan Franz and brother, George Greenwood.
