DYER BROOK, Maine – Jonathan Porter, principal at Southern Aroostook Community School announced that Cassidy Lyons of Dyer Brook, a senior at Southern Aroostook Community School, has been selected to receive the 2015 Principal’s Award.
The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
“Throughout her years here at Southern Aroostook, Cassidy has distinguished herself in the classroom and as a leader in the school and the community,” Porter noted in making the award. “She has been very active in many school- and community-related activities that have accentuated her outstanding character and commitment to excellence. She very much deserves this recognition.
Lyons is involved in a variety of school and community endeavors. She is a member of the National Honor Society and will graduate in June as valedictorian of her class. She has participated in four years of basketball, four years of varsity soccer, two years of varsity softball, Girls State and Dollars for Scholars.
She was voted as a class officer two years in high school, serving as treasurer and secretary in her freshman and sophomore years respectively. Lyons has regularly volunteered throughout high school including; Vacation Bible School, Share the Warmth clothing drive, Dollars for Scholars, Thanksgiving basket delivery, Elementary Christmas Concert/Dance and volunteering to help elementary staff with classroom setup. Lyons has job shadowed at Positive Steps in Houlton and has been employed at Vacationland Estates for three years.
Lyons is the daughter of Richard and Terri Lyons in Dyer Brook.
Lyons, Principal Porter and other award winners and their principals will attend an Honors Luncheon at the Spectacular Event Center on April 11. The Honors Luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler.
McGowan and Tyler were former Maine principals and executive directors of the Association. This year an additional five $1,000 scholarships will be presented through the efforts of the MPA Scholarship Golf Tournament. The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine’s school administrators.
