PIHS students to attend conference in Hiroshima
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle High School Critical Issues Forum team studies issues relating to nuclear nonproliferation and peaceful resolution of international conflict. They work under the aegis of the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey in Monterey, Calif. Normally, students attend an annual spring conference in Monterey, but this year promises a new experience for all.
In observation of the 70th anniversary of the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, this year’s spring conference will be held in Hiroshima, Japan. The discussion topic for this conference is “Nuclear disarmament: A humanitarian approach.”
Two students from PIHS, Emma Beaulieu and Grace Player, will be attending this conference, accompanied by Linda Palmer of the PIHS science department. The students will be making their presentation, “The Bridge to Nonproliferation,” at the Hiroshima conference April 2.
While at the conference, they will be living with a Japanese host family, touring Peace Park, and working with students from Japan, Russia, China and the United States.
When discussing the program, Principal Ben Greenlaw noted, “The CIF group is an impressive group of extremely bright and dedicated students that will represent PIHS in Japan with pride and dignity. I wish them well in this once-in-a-lifetime learning opportunity.”
After their return, the team will present to local organizations, the SAD 1 School Board, and various classes at PIHS.
