Robert Given, local shoemaker — Robert Given, a resident of this town who made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Sophia Barker, died Friday morning at 84 years. He was a master at his trade of shoemaking and his hand sewed boots and shoes were always in demand and shown at the 1914 Fair.
Phones for farmers — The advertisement from Aroostook Telephone & Telegraph Co. reads: “Farmers! You need a Telephone,” in case of such emergencies as fire, robberies, accidents and sickness. Lighten farm labors, save your horses, get weather reports, keep in touch with market quotations and “cheer up the home.”

Campbell and Hersey honored — One of the most interesting events in the history of Rockabema Lodge I.O.O.F. took place on Thursday when fifty-year membership jewels were presented to Allen J. Campbell of Littleton and past Grand Master of the Maine jurisdiction, Honorable Ira G. Hersey.
Muddy runways suspend flights — Service on the Aroostook Division of Boston-Maine Airways between Bangor, Millinocket, Houlton and Caribou will soon be suspended for a period of several weeks due to mud on unpaved airport runways.
Island Falls postal carrier on skis — George Thorne, R.F.D. carrier on route number 1 used skis when delivering the mail on the “Retreat” road, Tuesday. On Thursday he used snowshoes on this part of his route, which is in Hersey.

Voting rights law in Aroostook — Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach announced Aroostook County may be affected by a bill, currently before Congress, permitting federal intervention under the voting rights law. Aroostook County, Alabama, other southern states, Alaska, and counties in Idaho, Arizona and North Carolina could not continue requiring voters to read or write English in order to vote.

Monticello: softball field lights — Jay Brewer, president of the Monticello Softball Association, announced approximately $1,100 has been raised towards providing lights for the softball field. The lighting program will enable the town to expand recreation to include softball leagues for both men and women, and a Little League program for boys.

Meduxnekeag race benefits ‘Scholars’ — Houlton-Hodgdon Dollars for Scholars will hold a fundraising activity by instituting a Dollars for Scholars Sailboat Race on the Meduxnekeag River. Small wooden sailboats have been built by student woodworking classes with corresponding numbered tickets being sold. The boats will be launched at noon on Saturday, April 28.
