Cavs and Clippers win rec titles
Championships were held Friday in the Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department’s fifth- and sixth-grade basketball league, with the Cavaliers capturing the boys’ title and the Clippers claiming the victory on the girls’ side.
The boys were up first with the No. 2 Cavs and top-ranked Raptors going head-to-head. The game was a close battle and the Raptors led 20-15 after three quarters before getting in foul trouble and allowing the Cavs to make their comeback.
The Raptors committed 11 fouls in the final stanza and only scored a single foul shot. The Cavaliers capitalized on the foul trouble by going on a 12-1 run in the fourth period to capture the league title, winning 27-21.
The girls’ final was just as exciting as the boys game. The Clippers’ Meg Casavant scored 24 points, including 10 in the first quarter, in the 34-29 win.
Casavant scored all her team’s points in the opening period, while Faith Sjoberg, Portia Shaw and Jenna Sargent all made baskets for the Warriors to keep the score close.
In the second quarter, Izabelle Higgins helped the Clippers by scoring four points, with Casavant also netting four, while the Warriors kept it close behind Sjoberg, who hit a pair of threes and scored on a floater in the lane, and Sargent, who had the other basket. The two teams went into halftime with the Clippers leading, 18-16.
To start the third, Sjoberg put in six points for her Warriors, while the Casavant sisters combined for all six of the Clippers’ points as Meg had four and Mia two as the game remained close.
As the exciting fourth quarter ramped up, the Warriors had three points from Shaw and two each from Sjoberg and Sargent, but the Clippers were too much as Meg Casavant and Higgins had six and four, respectively.
Higgins finished with eight points for the winners, while Sjoberg scored 18 to pace the Warriors. Sargent and Shaw netted six and five, respectively.
In last Wednesday’s girls semifinal, the Maverick’s Hattie Bubar scored a game-high 18 points, with Rhylee Kinney adding 10 and Myah Bragdon two, but the Warriors prevailed in overtime, 35-30, with Sjoberg leading the way with 15, Sargent adding 10 Shaw six and Rossalyn Buck four.
The score was tied at 30 after regulation, but in the shortened extra period, the Warriors held the Mavericks scoreless. Sargent struck first with a hoop before a Sjoberg three-pointer with under a minute left sealed the deal and send the Warriors to the finals
In one boys’ semifinal, the Cavs eliminated the No. 3 Bulls 37-18. Chance Bragan had a game-high 21 points for the winners, with big man Cody Barnes adding 12. Matt Butler and Asher Tuttle each added hoops.
The Bulls were led by Jude Mosher’s 12 points, followed by Mason Fletcher with four and Ben Ryan with two.
In the other matchup the No. 4 Hawks tried to slow the powerful Raptors, but were unable to in a 46-9 loss.
The Raptors were led by Xavier McAtee’s 17 points followed by Jacob Devine with 12, Cavin Cleaves with eight, Jackson Maynard with seven and Chase Guerrette with two.
The Hawks had a difficult time getting to the hoop, but Jordan Higgins came up with seven points and Kaden Condo added a hoop.
