Presque Isle’s Hannah Graham and Washburn’s Mackenzie Worcester were the local players voted to the 39th annual Bangor Daily News All-Maine Schoolgirl Basketball Team.
Both were named to the second team. Graham was also a second-teamer last year, while Worcester made the third team in 2014.
Graham, a 5-foot-10 senior guard, was a 1,000-point scorer and was part of two Class B state championship and three Eastern Maine championship teams at Presque Isle High School. She was a finalist this season for the Miss Basketball Award and was co-Player of the Year in the Big East Conference as a junior. She played in the McDonald’s Senior All-Star game last month.
The Bowdoin College-bound Graham averaged 16.7 points and 4.3 assists this past season.
“She’s a player everyone would love to coach,” MDI coach Brent Barker said. “She has it all.”
“She is a true leader who did whatever it took for us to be successful,” PI coach Jeff Hudson said.
Worcester, also a senior guard, eclipsed the 2,000-point mark during her four-year career and her team captured Class D state titles all four years she played. She was a Miss Basketball semifinalist, a McDonald’s Senior All-Star and won the McDonald’s state free throw competition.
The 5-5 Worcester led a relatively inexperienced Beaver team to a fifth straight state championship with her season average of 25 points, eight rebounds and nine assists. Her 37 points against Rangeley was a Class D state championship-game record. It gave her 2,001 career points.
“She wasn’t very big, but she was deceptively quick and very athletic. She had a great basketball IQ,” Fort Fairfield coach Larry Gardner said.
“She did it all. She knows the game,” Washburn coach Diana Trams said.
Worcester is mulling her college options.
Players from the area garnering honorable mention were Krystal Kingsbury of Presque Isle, Chelsey Pelkey of Fort Fairfield and Joan Overman of Washburn. Other Aroostook County players recognized were Katie Condon of Houlton and Felisha Bouchard of Van Buren.
The team is chosen via votes from coaches, administrators, media officials and observers and was announced Friday. The All-Maine Schoolboy Basketball Team will be announced this weekend.
