CARIBOU, Maine — The Caribou Parks and Recreation Department hosted its third annual high school indoor soccer tournament fundraiser on Saturday, March 28, with girls’ teams playing in the morning and boys in the afternoon.
Four girls’ teams, including Ashland, Fort Kent and two Caribou squads, played each other in a round-robin format and then were seeded into a tournament bracket.
Entering tourney play, the Caribou Crushers went in as the top seed, Caribou Squad the No. 2 seed, Ashland Hornets third and Fort Kent Warriors fourth.
The Caribou teams won their semifinals, with the Crushers defeating Fort Kent and Caribou Squad topping Ashland.
Both Caribou teams faced off in the championship game where it came down to playing a five-minute sudden victory period followed by penalty kicks. Caribou Squad prevailed to win this year’s title.
In the boys’ division, there were 11 teams competing. Caribou, Presque Isle and Ashland each had two teams. Also participating were Fort Fairfield, Mars Hill, MSSM, Fort Kent and the AYFL Huskies.
The semifinals saw Presque Isle 1 play Caribou 1 and Mars Hill take on Ashland 2. Caribou 1 and Ashland 2 were the winners and faced off in the championship game, with Caribou 1 coming out on top.
Proceeds from the tourney benefit youth programs offered by the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department.
