 Watson receives honorable mention

Robbie Watson of Fort Fairfield was the only player from the region receiving honorable mention for the Bangor Daily News All-Maine Schoolboy Basketball Team, which was announced over the weekend.
Watson, a senior guard, led the Tigers in scoring and led his team to an Eastern Maine Class D title and a berth in the state finals. Watson was a finalist in the Maine Basketball Coaches Association state foul shooting competition, held in mid-March during McDonald’s All-Star Weekend in Bangor.
Two other players from Aroostook County were recognized. Houlton’s Kyle Bouchard was named to the first team, while Dayne Savage of Caribou earned honorable mention.

Track officials’ clinic

    The Maine Association of USA Track & Field will conduct a track and field official’s clinic on Sunday, April 19 in the Orono Council Chambers, located in the Town Office Building on 59 Main Street.  Registration is at 11:30 a.m. and the clinic will go from noon to 4 p.m.
The clinic is for anyone interested in officiating track and field at the youth, high school, or college level and/or becoming certified or re-certified.
Don Berry, master official in the sport and the Certification Chair for Maine USATF, will conduct the clinic. The clinic is designed to provide both a beginning and advanced levels on instruction and will cover all aspects of track and field officiating and rules review.

There is no cost for the clinic. Track rule books will be available for purchase. Drinks and snacks will be provided.

Lifeguard classes

    The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department is offering American Red Cross classes at the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Gentile Hall.
A full lifeguard course will be offered April 21, 22, 23 and 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and registrations must be completed by this Friday, April 17. The cost is $175. All course participants must be able to pass the pre-test, which includes a 300-yard (six laps) swim using front crawl or breaststroke, treading water for two minutes using legs only and completing a timed event to retrieve a 10 lb. brick from the deep end of the pool.
Participants must show proof that they are 15 years of age by the last day of the lifeguard course.
A lifeguard recertification will be offered Sunday, April 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and registrations must be completed by this Friday, April 17. The cost is $80. Participants must have a current certification.
Participants will receive certificates in Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR and AED. All certifications will expire in two years from completion date.

Brown named player of week

    University of Maine-Presque Isle senior infielder Shannon Brown of Calais has been selected the Association of Division III Independents softball player of the week.
Brown hit .367 with six extra base hits in a four-win week for the Owls and secured outs in all 54 of her chances in the field. The senior had 11 hits in 30 at bats, along with 10 RBI and 12 runs scored, while smacking four doubles and two triples. Brown slugged .663 and added four walks with an on-base percentage of .441 for the week.
