CARIBOU — Students of the Holy Rosary Sunday school in Caribou spent their Lenten season collecting food for the needy.
Faith Formation site coordinator for the Holy Rosary Church, Jeanine Morneault, along with her catechists encouraged their K-5 students to bring in food each week.
“During Lent our three pillars that we believe in are praying, fasting, almsgiving and what better way to do it than to collect food for the poor,” Morneault said. “It’s always done around Christmas holidays, but people are hungry any time during the year. So we decided to count that as one of our projects for Lent.”
Fifty-three children donated canned goods as well as cereals, pasta, macaroni and cheese, juice, and Jello, which will be donated to Caribou’s Catholic Charities.
“I donated because I had a lot of food and I felt bad for the people who didn’t have that much money because they’re living on streets. It almost made me want to cry because they’re out there alone with no food,” third-grader Calvin Hersey said.
“We also did a giving of money as well. We have a school in west Africa called Burkina Faso. For the past several years we’ve adopted this school over there and they’re very poor and a little bit of money goes a long way,” Morneault said.
A holy bucket and globe acted as banks and collected pennies and dollar bills brought in by the church’s students. “We’ve helped them get books, chairs, and helped build their school,” Morneault said.
“I’m proud of the students and I’m proud of the parents who stepped forward and encouraging their students and the catechists for taking this on it’s great,” Morneault said.
The Holy Rosary Church will continue to collect money for their adopted school in Africa throughout the year.
