A time of fellowship will be held immediately after at the Island Falls United Baptist Church. Spring interment will be at the Island Falls Cemetery. BANGOR – Althea (Drew) Given, daughter of M. Cyril and Gladys (Goode) Drew, passed away at the age of 94 on April 8, 2015, in Brewer. Althea was born in Dyer Brook, on April 27, 1920.
She attended school in Dyer Brook, before moving to Island Falls at age 11. Althea graduated from Island Falls High School in the class of 1937. On November 30, 1939, she married Kenneth Given. For many years, they operated a dairy farm from which they bottled, then delivered milk to many customers in the town. When the children became old enough, they helped with the farm chores. Althea worked for several years as a cook and waitress in Walt’s (O’Roak) Restaurant in town. Later, until her retirement, she worked as a medical transcriptionist in the medical records library at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
Althea is survived by her five children, Gloria Rivers of Waldorf, MD, Cecil Given and wife, Dianne of Island Falls, Marilyn Oakes and husband, Linwood of Monmouth, Laurance “Larry” Given of Litchfield, and Kareen King of Brewer; 16 grandchildren, Marilyn, Linda, Richard, Sandra, Melissa, Kimberly, Mark, Christopher, David, Kenneth, Linwood, Belinda, Timothy, Christine, Brent and Jason; 35 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Althea was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Kenneth (1975); a sister, Geraldine; brothers, M. Cyril Jr. and Leonard; a grandchild and a great-grandchild.
Friends may call 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22 at Bowers Funeral Home, Sherman Street, Island Falls, where funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. with the Rev. Ben Greene officiating. A time of fellowship will be held at the Island Falls United Baptist Church immediately following services. Spring interment will be in the Island Falls Cemetery.
