LITTLETON AND HOULTON – Dorothy Margaret Shaw Campbell, R.N., 92, went home to be with her Lord, April 18, 2015. She was born at home in Littleton on October 14, 1922, the daughter of Beverly (Bird) and Amber Stockford Shaw.
Dot received her early education at the one-room Logan School in Littleton and went on to graduate from Ricker Classical Institute. With a strong desire to pursue a nursing degree and no funds available, she worked for two years to earn the money to purchase medical books, uniforms and clothing for her three years of nurse’s training. She trained at Aroostook General Hospital School of Nursing with affiliations at Children’s Hospital of Pediatrics in Portland, Children’s Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, Bangor State Hospital of Psychiatry and Portland Maine General. After her marriage, she did private duty and on-call nursing while raising her children and being a farm wife. When her children started high school, she began a full-time nursing career, specializing in obstetrics and newborns at the Aroostook General Hospital, Madigan Hospital and Houlton Regional Hospital. Following her retirement in 1984, she continued to care for others, visiting area nursing homes and shut-ins.
At age 34, Dot attended an Oral Roberts Crusade and received Jesus Christ as Lord of her life, an event that, in her words, changed her life forever! Psalms 16:11 states, “Thou wilt make known to me the path of life; In thy presence is fullness of joy; In thy right hand there are pleasures forever.” She was a member of the Littleton United Baptist Church and then Military Street Baptist Church and served in a variety of ministries.
Dot was passionate about the history of her family, the town of Littleton where she lived most of her life and the hospitals where she worked. She kept written accounts and photo albums of a variety of community interests and dedicated the last 10 years to sharing her enthusiasm for history at the Southern Aroostook Agricultural Museum in Littleton. Dot often recalled her life as “blessed” and gave God all the credit for everything she accomp-lished. She faithfully served and found great joy in His many blessings, her family being the dearest of all. Her love and care for others was a true reflection of God’s presence and priority in her life. From her family, to her career, her church/community, the sick and less fortunate, she always found ways to love, encourage and serve. Even while residing at Gardiner Healthcare Facility, she prayed for those around her. The family will always be grateful for all the kindness and care shown by the family at Gardiner.
She was predeceased by her husband, Eldon in 1981 and infant daughter, Susan in 1952; three brothers, Theodore, Roland, and Milton and one sister, B. Edna Whyte. Surviving are her daughter, Sheila Campbell Cowperthwaite and her husband, Dwight, of Houlton; her son, Barry and his wife, Debbie, of Littleton; grandchildren; Kelly Cowperthwaite Little and her husband, Gene, and their children, Emily and Allison; Tessa Campbell Burpee and husband, Shane, and daughter Nora; Heather Campbell and her children, Darcie, Skyler, and Natalee and Joy Cowperthwaite and her children, Austin, Anthony and Addyson; brother, Hartley Shaw and her sisters, Shirley Warman and Marie Hagerman.
Friends called Tuesday, April 21 at Military Street Baptist Church, Houlton, from 1-2 p.m., where funeral services followed at 2 p.m. with Rev. Randal Burns officiating. Spring interment will be at the Littleton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Southern Aroostook Agricultural Museum, a GHCA Memorial Scholarship or the charity of your choice.
