AUBURN & PRESQUE ISLE – Mary Anna (Nan) West Hunter, 90, passed away on April 24 at the Clover Manor Health Care Facility after a brief illness. She was born in Presque Isle on August 14, 1924, the daughter of Charles F. and Charlotte Collins West.
She attended local schools, graduating from high school in 1942 before attending two years of college and nursing school, graduating in 1946.
Nan married her husband, Dana J. Hunter, on December 28, 1946, and together they raised their family. They were married for 45 years before he passed away in 1990.
She worked at Massachusetts General Hospital as a registered nurse for four years before retiring and raising her family full-time. Nan loved to golf and was a Ladies Golf Champion of Presque Isle Country Club, for which she received a write-up in Golf Digest. Nan also enjoyed downhill and cross-country skiing, bowling and swimming laps in her pool. In her later years, she knit baby sweaters and hats, donating many of the items to local churches. Searching out family genealogy was important to her and she made trips to Salt Lake City and Canada to do her research. Nan’s passion, however, was to travel the world to places such as Europe, Central America, Africa and Australia.
Nan is survived by her three children, Dana J. and his wife, Linda Hunter, of Little Deer Isle, Debra J. Hunter of MA, and M. Elizabeth Martin of Auburn; three grandchildren, D. Joshua and his wife, Jen Hunter, Katy Hunter, and Emily Martin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents; husband; and a brother, George West.
The family wishes to thank the staffs at Clover Health Care and Beacon Hospice for their compassionate care.
A Memorial Mass and Committal Service will take place at a later date in Presque Isle. Donations may be made to The American Cancer Society, 1901 Brunswick Ave, Suite 100, Charlotte, NC 28207 in Nan’s name.
