CARIBOU, Maine — In honor of past volunteers of the Limestone Fire Department (LFD), third-generation fire chief Jon Poitras along with current volunteers came together and purchased grave markers for those who served the LFD and have passed on.
“The fire service is a brotherhood, “ Poitras said. “We’re all brothers and sisters here at the fire service, and this is ultimately to honor them once they’ve fallen.”
A flag partnered with a Maltese cross medallion will be placed at each grave. The flags are already at the fire station, and the fire department has asked that anyone who wishes to have a medallion at a grave site to please help with the purchase of the $15 marker. Poitras’ father Paul has offered to purchase medallions for all of the town’s fire chiefs who’ve passed on.
For those who wish to help with the purchase of a medallion please contact Chief Poitras at 325-4703 or chiefpoitras@limestone maine.org.
Flags will fly from Memorial Day until Labor Day.
In other news, students of the Loring Job Corps Home Building Institute crew recently touched up the interior of the Limestone fire station.
Students Dave Parker, Frank Koroma, Kenneth Robinson and Marquis Moody painted office walls, doorjambs and touched up drywall. The fire department supplied all the paint, brushes and tape, and the students performed the labor at no cost to the station.
After the project was finished the LFD rewarded the crew with a small luncheon.
“The building hasn’t been touched since 2007,” Poitras said. “We’re really satisfied with the work they did. [The students] do offer professionalism.”
