The weather has cooperated and high school baseball season got under way last week. Recaps from the week’s games are as follows:
Houlton 15, Matt. Academy 9 — On Monday at Community Park in Houlton, the Shiretowners (1-1) picked up their second win of the season after rallying from a five-run deficit, 8-5, after three-and-a-half innings.
Senior Dan Howe sparked the Houlton comeback with three hits, four RBIs and by scoring four times. Jake Drew had four stolen bases and scored five runs. Ryan Dee earned the win in relief, striking out eight in 4 1/3 innings, while giving up one earned run.
Caribou 7, Houlton 4 — Last Wednesday, the Houlton Shires opened their season hosting Caribou. The game was close as the Vikings led 5-4 after three innings, scoring two more runs in the top of the seventh to secure the win.
Dee and Drew both had hits for the Shires.
SACS 15, Hodgdon 5 — On Monday in Dyer Brook, the Warriors carved out an 8-0 lead until the Hawks scored five in the top of the third. However, the Warriors were able to drive in runs over the next three-and-a-half innings, while holding Hodgdon scoreless. The Warriors had nine hits in the game and Hodgdon had four.
Josh Perrin threw 3 1/3 innings of no-hit relief and struck out six. Leading SACS offense were Parker Walker and Nate Lilley who each tripled, while Cory Rockwell, Hunter Lawlor and Gage LeFay all doubled.
For Hodgdon, brothers Matthew and Ben Tuttle each singled.
Katahdin 9, Schenck 3 — Monday in East Millinocket, T.J. Young of Katahdin threw a two-hitter, striking out 14 batters. Dakota Reinhardt singled twice and drove in two runs for Katahdin, while Cody Brownlee also had a pair of singles.
The Cougars are 1-3 on the year.
The Cougars scored five runs in the top of the fourth for a lead of 5-3 going into the sixth inning.
SACS 8, Katahdin 5 — The Warriors led 4-3 over four innings before driving in three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good on Saturday in Dyer Brook.
Walker struck out 10 in four innings of work. He helped his own cause with a solo homer in the sixth. Austin White, LeFay and Perrin each singled.
For the Cougars, Derek Atkinson tripled followed by singles from Todd Young, Dakota Reinhardt and Cooper Drew.
Ashland 9, Hodgdon 7 — Last Friday in Hodgdon, the Hornets used a strong sixth inning to take the win. Cody Blair threw a complete game and helped his own cause with two singles. Blair also scored three times. Kyle Beaulieu reached base safely four times and scored three times.
For Hodgdon, Dillon Buzzell hit a run-scoring double and Jordyn Merritt reached base safely three times and scored a run.
The Hawks led 4-1 after four innings before Ashland climbed back into the game with two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to hold a 6-4 lead.
Hodgdon 12, Katahdin 9 — Last Thursday in Hodgdon, the Hawks rallied back from a 9-5 deficit with a seven-run sixth to take the win.
Matt Tuttle doubled, singled and drove in a run to lead the Hawks in the comeback win, while Ben Tuttle singled twice and Jimmy Buzzell reached base safely three times and scored three times.
Shay Lane singled, doubled and scored three times for the Cougars, while Young singled twice and drove in a run.
Hodgdon 4, Washburn 2 — To open their season last Tuesday at home, the Hawks scored three runs in the second and another in the third for a 4-0 lead. Washburn cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth.
Sam Horton and Dillon Buzzell combined on the mound, with offense coming from Blake Woods, who scored two runs, and Wyatt Foster who scored a run.
Wisdom 10, EG/GH 2 — On Friday in St. Agatha, the East Grand/GHCA team held a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the second when Wisdom drove in five runs. Wisdom plated three runs in the fourth and another two in the fifth.
Kevin Chamberland hit a two-run home run while Dominic Voisine and Jack Gurette each notched two hits to power the Pioneers.
