Cold temperatures are gone, hopefully, and the Houlton Agricultural Fair will be here soon. In just eight short weeks, we will be celebrating the Fourth of July and riding the rides at the fair.
This year we have made a few changes to the premium booklet and we have added some new cooking contests.
Thursday, July 2, will be a free day to enter the park. Come look around, get your carnival sausage and your cotton candy. If you are interested in riding the rides that day, you can purchase a ride bracelet for $10. This is only on July 2.
Also on July 2, we have come up with a new cooking contest: Spam. Yes, Spam. Cook up your favorite Spam recipe and bring it up to the exhibit hall for judging at 3:30 p.m.
For the kids on Kids’ Day, July 3, we are having a cupcake cooking/decorating contest. For ages 12 and under a cake mix can be used to make your cupcakes, then decorate them as you would like. Be creative. For the 13- to 17-year-olds, a recipe has been provided for you in the premium booklet, but you may decorate them as you wish. Judging will be on taste, creativity and originality.
Also, the cookie contest is a firecracker fudge cookie. The recipe can be found in the premium booklet or online.
July 4 will be the State of Maine Apple Pie Contest, so practice your favorite apple pie recipe now and perfect it for the contest. All pies must be in a disposable pie plate.
Also on July 4, back by popular demand, we are having a Bacon Day cooking contest. We will be looking for bacon appetizers, bacon entrees and bacon desserts/candy. So get your thinking caps on and come up with a delicious bacon recipe.
Don’t forget the State of Maine Blueberry Pie contest on July 5. Winners of the apple and blueberry pie contests will go on to the state competition in Augusta.
We are also doing a slider/burger contest and a salsa/guacamole contest, both to be held on July 5.
Some items have been removed from the premium booklet due to lack of entries. Please visit houltonfair.com or look for the 2015 premium booklets, out soon.
