Parents enjoy a special Mother’s Day treat

WASHBURN NEWS

by Beth Boddy

Washburn Elementary’s pre-kindergarten students invited their moms for a special treat on Friday, May 8.  The mothers received lovely paper flower corsages and got to have their photo taken with their child upon arriving.

This was followed by a little entertainment as the children sang some lovely songs, while wearing Hungry Caterpillar shirts that they painted themselves. There was also a small snack of treats that are found in the book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle. Each mom also received a very special photo book with special pictures of their child from throughout the school year. It was a very special day for the pre-kindergarten boys and girls, along with their mommies.

School Lunch Hero Day

Students in grades 2-4 at Washburn Elementary held a School Lunch Hero Day on Friday, May 8. The students made posters to decorate the lunchroom and they made thank-you cards for the lunchroom staff. TAMC provided activity books for the students, Steve Boddy of KC & Company DJ donated a set of the “Lunch Lady” graphic novel series by Jarrett J. Krosoczka to the Washburn Elementary School Library. Washburn Rotary also donated a set of the books for the 2nd through 4th grade classrooms in Washburn. Virtual Managed Solutions of Caribou prepared certificates for each of the lunchroom staff along with a Lunch Hero Apron.
The ladies working in the lunchroom on Friday were delighted by all the attention and thanks. Lunch Hero Day is celebrated nationally on the first Friday of May every year. Washburn had to postpone a week due to scheduling. Lunch Hero day is an opportunity to recognize the hardworking professionals in our school lunchrooms. Between preparing healthy meals for our students, navigating student food allergies and offering service with a smile, school nutrition professionals are true heroes!
