• Dandelion greens are now in order. The music of the frogs is now to be heard.
• During the rainstorm of Friday a large quantity of angle worms made an appearance, the sidewalks in many places being so completely covered that one had to step on them in walking.

100 Years Ago-May 13, 1915

    Multifaceted business — In an advertisement for G.M. Morgan, Complete House Furnishers, Undertakers and Embalmers: “Do stay for tea. There’s a little thrill of satisfaction in having your friends to tea when your dining room is perfectly appointed. The case which you can have a cozy and attractive dining room is emphasized in our home lovers’ exhibit of furniture.”
    Life is a cabaret — Caribou’s first cabaret show, given under the auspices of the Murray Club of the Universalist Church at P. of H. Opera House, scored an unqualified success. The attendance was large. Interspersed between the several specialties were numerous dances, adding continual change and pleasure to the program.

75 Years Ago-May 9, 1940

    Runaway logs — During the past week one bank of the Aroostook River here was piled deeply with pulpwood, fugitive from a drive which smashed a huge boom at Sheridan last Thursday and ran wild downriver. About 10,000 cords of the wood broke loose, some of it going wildly on down to the St. John, unchecked as the emergency broke on an entirely unexpectant crew.
    New weather official — Caribou’s new weather station at the airport will not only check weather data at ground level but will send balloons into the air to check wind direction and velocities and heights up to 30,000 feet, according to information revealed by Ernest W.G. KIiemann, chief of the station. Balloons will be released four times, day and night.

50 Years Ago-May 13, 1965

    Takes Limestone reins — Paul Knight, chairman of the Limestone Board of Selectmen, has announced the appointment of Dave H. Harpine as town manager. Harpine, who has been town manager of Mars Hill since January 1961, will assume his duties in Limestone on June 1. The post was vacated by Robert Palmer Jr., who resigned following the annual town meeting in March.
  Spring improvements — The week of May 16-22 has been proclaimed “Clean-Up, Paint-Up, Fix-Up Week” in Caribou and the town is rapidly getting into the mood. A highlight of the week will be a free trash pickup service by civic trucks. The week is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.

25 Years Ago-May 9, 1990

    DMV motors on — The announcement was made that the familiar motor vehicle office at the corner of Herschel and Prospect streets in Caribou would be moving for the first time since 1968. State officials said four local developers had offered proposals for a new DMV office.
Marking 50 years — Caribou’s Holy Rosary Circle 638 of the Daughters of Isabella marked 50 years of service to the church and community with Mass, followed by a meal and entertainment. Charter members at the event — who had been present at the circle’s inception — were Anna Raymond, Laura St. Peter and Elizabeth Manship.
