CARIBOU, Maine — The mobile bridge connecting the south side of Caribou to the north side along the Lagasse Connector trail for off-road vehicles will be replaced with a permanent structure later this year.
Caribou Recreation Department has received $30,000 from a federal recreational trails project grant and has asked the city for additional funds through a tax-increment financing program bringing the total cost to $70,000 for a new bridge over Caribou Stream.
“[The mobile bridge] was always temporary and right now with $30,000 it’s time to put in a permanent structure,” Caribou Parks and Rec Superintendent Gary Marquis said.
The mobile bridge was seasonal and relied on Marquis and members of the Public Works Department to erect and dismantle it every year. Marquis said it was just getting to be too much of a hassle.
The new permanent bridge will be made of steel, approximately a hundred feet long and 14 feet high. Marquis expects the project to be completed later this summer.
