A local family is struggling to make ends meet and is hoping the public can help, as the mother undergoes treatment for multiple illnesses.
“I was born in Tampa in 1980 but lived most of my life in Connecticut, where I went to school. I left New Fairfield High in 10th grade due to mental health issues stemming from sexual, emotional and physical abuse I was going through. I later graduated from Danbury High night school. My mother, Karen Driscoll, died at 54. The man I’ve known as my father since age 4 is Charles Shelley. I moved to Maine in 2004 — married my second husband, Mark Botting, in 2007 and we have two daughters who are 5 and 7,” said Michelle Botting, of Presque Isle.
According to Botting, she’s suffered numerous conditions most of her life.
“I’ve been diagnosed with mental health issues, including severe PTSD, depression, bi-polar 2 disorder, and anxiety. I began having physical health issues in 2006 while pregnant with my first child. These issues ranged from being tired all the time, severe stomach pain, overall body pain, trouble with my bowels, bladder and eating,” she said.
Though she saw many doctors and specialists over the years, most issues weren’t diagnosed until 2010. Since then, she’s been on numerous medications and undergone an array of treatments and therapy.
“I have had 31 procedures or surgeries that were performed from Cary Medical Center to Portland hospitals. As of now I am diagnosed with: chronic interstitial cystitis (a debilitating bladder condition), fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, GERD/gastritis, insomnia, bi-polar 2 affective disorder, severe PTSD, anxiety, depression, osteopenia, borderline intellectual functioning, irritable bowel syndrome, and a possible form of colitis. I also had parathyroid tumor disease up until May 10, when they removed the tumor down in Portland,” said Botting.
Due to ill health, Botting is unable to work.
“I have an assistant who comes in to help with my daily living tasks as well as a nurse who manages my meds, checks vitals and does lab work when needed. I’ve been fighting to get SSI (Social Security for disabled individuals) since 2010. I use a cane and am unable to do much due to my mental and physical limitations,” said Botting.
She said her family has suffered as a result.
“My conditions have put a huge strain on me and my family physically, emotionally and financially,” Botting said.
In addition to benefit suppers, her family has established an account at www.gofundme.com/ourlove4mom to help raise money to cover expenses related to medical appointments and her husband’s lost wages as a result of taking time off to be with her.
“There have been a number of times I have had to cancel appointments due to not having the money to get there and it makes it harder to treat/manage my conditions when I miss seeing my doctors,” said Botting. “If anyone is willing to help, I and my family would appreciate it.”
