CARIBOU, Maine — Regional Representative Sharon Campbell, from Senator Angus King Jr.’s office in Presque Isle, recently visited the Aroostook County Action Program (ACAP) Early Care and Education Center in Caribou.
Campbell was able to tour the facility and learn about all the services provided at the site. During her tour, she had the opportunity to enjoy some time with the children and read three stories to the traditional Head Start classroom.
According to facility officials, ACAP Early Care and Education Centers provide both Early Head Start from birth to age 3, and a comprehensive preschool program for children ages 3-5 for income-eligible families, as well as wrap-around child care. Everything is designed to be child-centered learning with a focus on school readiness in the areas of language, literacy, math and science.
In addition, the centers provide dental, vision, hearing, nutrition and developmental screening and followup for the children and work with families to strengthen outcomes. Currently there is a waiting list at Caribou’s center.
Senator King was pleased to have Campbell tour the facility. “Investing in kids early not only jumpstarts their academic career, but it also helps to foster a desire to learn that can shape and change their lives,” he said. “And in Maine, the Head Start program provides access to a quality pre-K learning experience that they may not have had otherwise. I’m proud to support Head Start and will continue to work to expand early learning because there’s no better investment.”
