Ashland downs Fort for fifth win of year
The Ashland Hornets avenged a loss 10 days earlier to the Fort Fairfield Tigers by winning Monday afternoon, 7-3.
The Hornets improved its record to 5-2 and find themselves in fourth place in the Eastern Maine Class D standings. Kyle Beaulier doubled to lead the winning attack, Ben Vaughan got the pitching win. Ashland travels to take on Hodgdon Thursday in a meaningful game for both teams. The Hawks are currently in second place with their 4-3 record.
Liam McNamee doubled for the Tigers, who dropped to 5-3 and had their five-game winning streak snapped. Fort Fairfield is in eighth place in the division.
The Tigers crushed Limestone-MSSM last Wednesday, 23-3, behind the pitching of freshman Jared Harvey and a 13-hit attack paced by Dalton Cassidy and Carter Bruce.
Fort Fairfield faces a major test Thursday by making the trip to Dyer Brook to meet up against the No. 1 Southern Aroostook Warriors, who currently sport an 8-1 mark.
Washburn also stands at 5-3 and is one position higher than the Tigers in seventh. The Beavers bested Wisdom Monday, 14-5. They also had beaten East Grand/GHCA in Houlton last Wednesday, 11-4. Washburn’s next opponents are Fort Kent today and Limestone-MSSM Thursday.
Presque Isle was shut out in the first game of a home doubleheader Saturday against Hermon, but came back to win game two to salvage the split and remain in the playoff hunt in EM Class B. The Wildcats are now 5-5 and in 11th place in the division, with the top 13 advancing.
In the 9-2 victory, Ben Buckley scattered five hits in the complete-game performance and Andrew Paterson, Sam Gray, Nick Bartlett and Cristian Nunez were the leading hitters with three hits apiece.
The Wildcats will play No. 10 Foxcroft Academy (6-3) in a twinbill Saturday afternoon in Dover-Foxcroft.
