Beckum first in adventure race

More than 70 participants competed in the 10th annual East Grand Adventure Race and Baskahegan Stream Canoe Race in Danforth Saturday, May 9.
The 18-plus mile course included a 1.4-mile compass run, nine miles of mountain biking, eight miles of paddling and several challenges along the way including log rolling, tomahawk throwing, two-person cross cut saw and a mud crawl.

Thomas Beckum of Caribou won the open division with a time of 2 hours, 39 minutes and 52 seconds after calculating time off for completing challenges.
Winners of the high school boys division and overall winners were Philip Farley of Brookton and Peter Apgar of Danforth with a course time of 2:03:18. Airin Harmon and Malcolm Milligan, both of Ashland, placed third in the division with a course time of 2:14:38.
Other local winners include the father-and-son team of Eric and Thomas Gilman in the junior/senior division; Sam Plummer and Sarah Stoddard in the high school mixed division; and Logan Crone and Andy VeNess in the men’s division.
Jessica Johnson and Mack Hall, both of Ashland, competed in the junior/senior division and posted a time of 5:39:13.
Orono High School had several students and adult teams in the race.
Over 50 volunteers and several sponsors helped make the event possible.
