Two PI players advance
State tourney next for Boucher, Norton
Two Wildcat tennis players are moving on to the state singles tournament after going undefeated in the regional qualifier held at Caribou Saturday.
Hilary Boucher was seeded fourth entering the event and prevailed in her two matches. She beat Emma Hines of Houlton in the opening round, 8-2, before stopping Conner Spencer of Caribou in the qualifying round, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
Chase Norton pulled off one of only two upsets in boys’ play. Norton, seeded sixth, shut out Houlton’s Dakota Gramour, 8-0, before beating Caribou’s Brendan Cyr in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, to advance.
The state tourney is slated for Colby College in Waterville May 30 and June 1.
Other PI players competing in the qualifier were Michelle Cawley and Sarah Morneault for girls and Byron Winslow for the boys.
On Monday in Houlton, the PI boys defeated the Shires, 5-0, while the girls were upended, 3-2.
The Wildcat boys are now 7-1 after Norton, Winslow and Carroll swept their singles matches and the doubles combinations of Denny Young-Colin Daigle and Isaac Madore-Tyler Ayotte came out on top. PI is currently ranked fifth in Eastern Maine Class B.
The PI girls saw Boucher and Cawley take their singles matches, but Morneault and the doubles team of Sedona Lucas and Miranda Bragan were defeated. The Wildcats forfeit of the No. 2 doubles match proved to be the difference as PI is now 6-2 on the year and in 10th place in EM Class B.
On Friday at home, Presque Isle took doubleheaders from Madawaska.
