100 Years Ago- June 2, 1915

Hunt returns from expedition — Houlton friends of Dr. Harrison L. Hunt, who practiced medicine at Island Falls for a number of years, will be interested to learn he will return to the U. S. this summer, after two years in the Arctic region as physician for MacMillan’s Arctic Expedition.

Bridgewater Baptist observes 75th — The Baptist Church in Bridgewater is celebrating its 75th anniversary with a series of lectures and musical programs.

Bell is Miss Maine finalist — Miss Virginia Bell, who represented Houlton in the Miss Maine pageant at Portland last week, was selected as one of the eight finalists and performed the song “I Enjoy Being a Girl” during a statewide television broadcast.
Still smoking — Judging from the latest figures on cigarette sales in the area, smokers have done very little to their smoking since the Surgeon General’s report came out a year ago. Aroostook County residents smoked a total of 15, 540,000 packs of cigarettes in the past year, a rate of 217 packs per capita for the entire population of 18 years of age.

McDonald’s joins recycling pledge — Ed and Dawn Degenhardt, franchisees of McDonald’s in Houlton have joined other franchises worldwide in pledging to address environmental issues by pledging to use recycled materials on such products as napkins, drink trays, tray liners and Happy Meal boxes.
