PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Mark Neddeau, of Presque Isle, a chaplain for the Presque Isle Police Department, recently became certified to work with other agencies, following training obtained earlier this year.
“The PIPD sent me to the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro in February, where training focused on different issues, like ministry of presence — to be on the spot in offering assistance to people in crisis. I also joined the domestic violence task force under Pete Johnson,” said Neddeau. Johnson, a former officer with the PIPD, now serves as deputy with the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office.
Neddeau said he’s been talking with Chief Matt Irwin, at the PIPD, on ways he can better serve all departments.
“I talked to the chief about focusing on dealing with repeat offenders — going outside the mainstream to give support. I’m a certified counselor in Christian education and can offer faith-based counseling services,” he said.
With the training he received downstate, Neddeau said he can now serve the needs of other departments, in addition to continuing his role with the PIPD.
“I’m lawfully certified to deal with all law enforcement offices, from the FBI, to Homeland Security, as well as local,” said Neddeau.
Neddeau serves as chaplain on a volunteer basis, handling everything from crisis situations to funerals.
“I’ve done several funerals related to the police department — accident-related, unattended deaths,” he said.
He said the added training will help him in working with other agencies.
“It will help me walk into situations that may involve other departments. It extends the faith-based reach into the community, while supporting local law enforcement. I can now deal with cases involving PTSD and more,” said Neddeau.
Neddeau said it was an intense learning experience.
“It was a full week of training. I stayed at the academy and trained eight hours a day. I received a pin and plaque upon completion,” said Neddeau. “It’s a new program this year being offered through the state. I was in the first class that received this training and certification.”
