Flag football games offered in Star City
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Flag football is coming to The County.
The Aroostook Huskies Football Club will host games on the smaller practice soccer field behind Presque Isle High School for kids who will be in the grades 1-6 this fall, and their parents, every Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday morning from 9-11 a.m. during June and July.
There is no charge to participate. All that is required is signing a release form acknowledging an understanding a slight risk of injury and holding Aroostook Huskies Football Club harmless.
There are no other requirements — just come out and have fun. Flags, footballs and officials will be provided. Participants should come equipped with sunscreen and water.
There is no commitment to attend every session. Flag football will not be held July 4 due to the Independence Day holiday.
“Many parents are frightened about the idea of allowing their children to play football because of adverse publicity surrounding the game, such as risks of concussion and the negative role models in the news,” said Stu Wyckoff, representing the Aroostook Huskies Football Club.
“We are introducing the central Aroostook County area to football the way we do it — with our emphasis on safety, character development and teaching important life skills such as responsibility and accountability, time management, exercising good judgment and impulse control, planning and goal setting, sportsmanship, courage, teamwork, and leadership.
“We’re confident that, once folks know what we offer, they will recognize us as a valuable community resource,” he added.
