HOULTON, Maine — Chris Rines, Houlton’s track and field coach, is pleased with his team’s individual athleticism, as several members have hit qualifying marks. Last Friday in Presque Isle, team members showed they were contenders in the Aroostook County League Meet.
Isaiah Brown hit a sub-five minute in the 1,600 meter for the first time ever, while Josh Upton, Austin Brown and Natalie Hill tried new events. Upton participated in the 4×400 meter relay; A. Brown competed in the high jump and finished in a two-way tie for third; and Hill made her debut in the javelin, as she qualified for States provisionally on her second throw, Rines noted.
Rines is very pleased with Olivia Winslow’s progress in the 1,600 meter, as well.
“She has consistently dropped time off in every meet this season,” he said.
The girls 4 x 400 meter relay team of Emily Mooers, Madelene Anderson, Olivia White and Rylee Warman grabbed second out of five teams during last Friday’s meet.
The Aroostook County League Meet is one of three post season track and field championships.
“For several athletes this would serve as one of the last opportunities for them to hit qualifying marks for the PVC Small School and State championships,” Rines said. “Many of our athletes took the challenge and despite severe wind conditions, were able to hit personal record marks, several of whom improved their already qualifying times to better their seed in the championships to come.”
