Mary Lou Pomeroy and daughter, Jane Foster, were in Island Falls last week for a short stay and while here they made a quick visit to Riva to see how she was doing before they made their return trip to Caribou, hoping that the snow that was on the ground the morning they set out would soon be gone by noon.
The Island Falls area got a smattering of snow that same morning, but it melted as soon as it fell.
Island Falls has a new takeout which just opened the third week in May, and this is run by Mike McNally, son of Kathy and Junior McNally, who for many years were the owners of Kathy’s restaurant in Island Falls. This was a very popular restaurant and was busy seven days a week, and many a friendship was made there over a cup of coffee.
Mike learned how to cook under the watchful eye of his mother and has always wanted a place of his own, so decided on opening a takeout. It is located on the lot between Porter’s garage and K&T office and will be open from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. seven days a week, offering a wide selection of everything, including fresh seafood, and side orders, including Kathy’s famous homemade onion rings. Mike hopes to be busy and plans to keep the takeout open until Labor Day, so round up the kiddos and bring your family to enjoy eating at our new takeout.
I had the good luck to look out my big window one evening about 7 p.m. and there, standing very still and alert over beyond my big birch tree, was a good-sized moose. It was my first time in many years to see one that close, but he didn’t stay very long. He slowly ambled off into the deep woods nearby.
I still have lots of crows that appear to like my backyard, as every evening I have many flying in, finding something good to munch on in my lawn, then taking off.
There is a special branch on the birch tree that the crows seem to like and, as it looks somewhat slender, I wonder why it doesn’t snap in two when two of them are perched on it. So far, it is still there, and I watch to see if it breaks and the crows have to maneuver to stay aloft.
I have seen several hummingbirds around and finally filled up my feeder and put it out by the cedar tree. Now, to catch them eating.
