Caribou boys tennis team earns bye, girls to play Winslow today

The Caribou boys’ tennis team earned a bye through the preliminary round and will take on either Old Town or Mount Desert Island in a home quarterfinal to be played Thursday at 3 p.m.
The Vikings grabbed the No. 4 seed in Eastern Maine Class B thanks to an 11-1 regular season record. Caribou beat both the No. 12 Coyotes and the No. 5 Trojans during the regular season by identical 5-0 scores. Both of those matches were held on the road.

A win by Caribou in the upcoming match would most likely send the team to Ellsworth for a semifinal meeting with the No. 1 Eagles Saturday.
The Caribou girls are scheduled to host Winslow this morning at 10 a.m. The Lady Vikings went 10-2 during the regular season to earn the fifth seed in the division. Winslow, at 6-6, is the No. 11 seed.
The winner earns the right to play the undefeated Waterville Panthers, ranked third, in the quarterfinals.
The Viking teams ended the regular season last Tuesday by sweeping Presque Isle in a match played on the UMPI courts.
The boys won, 3-2, as Brendan Cyr defeated Byron Winslow in second singles, 8-2, while both doubles teams came out on top. Austin Scott and Alec Cyr (C) got past Denny Young and Alex Brewer, 9-7, while Emerson Duplissie-Cyr and Seth Beidelman downed Colin Daigle and Isaac Madore, 8-1.
Michael Marquis in first singles and Ethan Plourde in third singles lost their matches.
The Viking girls rolled to a 5-0 triumph as Gabrielle Marquis bested Hilary Boucher, 8-1, in first singles; Conner Spencer stopped Michelle Cawley, 8-1, in second singles; and Makayla Bouchard prevailed over Sarah Morneault, 8-2, in third singles.
Doubles matches saw the combinations of Ashley Matlock-Ciara Richards and Danielle Hanson-Taylor Fournier-Belanger win by forfeit.
In the state singles tournament played Friday at Colby College in Waterville, Michael Marquis gained a 6-2, 7-5 win over Hall-Dale’s Bryson Camp in the first round before losing to Lee Academy’s Luka Stevic, the third seed, 6-0, 6-0.
Plourde took Ellsworth’s Alec Toothaker to three sets in his first-round match, but lost, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.
Gabrielle Marquis scored a win over Bangor’s Aidan Coyne in the first round, 6-2, 6-1, but then fell to No. 7 Liv Clifford of Cape Elizabeth in the second round, 6-0, 6-1.
