WASHBURN NEWS

by Beth Boddy

The Washburn District High School Destination Imagination Team was able to travel to Knoxville, Tenn., thanks to a lot of hard work, fund-raising and some generous donations from area businesses and community members.

After winning at the state level competition, the Washburn team competed in a global competition against 69 teams from around the world. The competition consisted of two challenges: the central challenge and an instant challenge.
They had an amazing time meeting with and experiencing other cultures, as well as sharing ideas and solutions to the challenges set forth through this program. While traveling, they were able to observe glass-blowing demonstrations, the process of making kettle-cooked potato chips, and experienced the Luray Caverns in Virginia. They interacted with and shared this experience with 1,468 teams, with more than 12,000 attendees.
The DI program introduces youth to science, technology, engineering and math, while performing and displaying creativity and fine arts. For a full description of the program go to idodi.org.
The team wants to thank the community, area businesses, the school and family members for making it possible to attend this event. They would also like to give a special thank you to Mr. Reed for taking the time to drive the team to and from Knoxville.

Washburn District School Art Show

On Thursday, May 21, the Washburn School District held its annual Art Show. The elementary school halls were covered with artwork from students in classes pre-K through 12th. There were many amazing pictures from many different art genres using many different art mediums. It was very impressive and the students in Washburn are very talented.

Watch out for the little ones

With the weather getting warmer, more kids are walking to and from school, and are out playing and riding bikes in the afternoon. Please make an effort to slow down and pay attention when driving through town. Please follow the posted speed limit signs and keep your eyes on the road.
