NEW LIMERICK, Maine — A New Limerick man reportedly assaulted three individuals at a home in New Limerick, stole a vehicle and then crashed it causing serious injuries to himself Sunday morning, according to Maine State Police.
Dustin Smith is expected to be charged with aggravated assault and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle following the incident.
Troopers responded to a New Limerick home after receiving a report that several individuals at the home had been assaulted shortly after 10 a.m. The state police have not released their names. During their investigation, trooper Chuck Michaud learned that Dustin Smith had assaulted three people at the residence and fled the scene before troopers arrived. State Police K-9 was called in to track him.
While tracking the suspect, police discovered a vehicle had crashed a short distance from the home of the assaults. State Police believe Smith stole the vehicle and crashed it after failing to negotiate a sharp turn on the Station Road in New Limerick.
Smith was ejected from the vehicle and trapped underneath it. After his rescue, he was transported to Houlton Regional Hospital and later transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center. The three individuals who had been assaulted by Smith were also transported to Houlton Regional Hospital and were later admitted.
