HOULTON, Maine — It looks like the only softball team solidifying a spot in the playoffs is Class D East Grand/Greater Houlton Christian Academy. The Houlton girls are sitting on the bubble.
In Class D, the latest Heal Points show EG/GHCA in fifth with an 8-6 record, following No. 1, Washburn, 12-2; No. 2, Limestone/MSSM, 13-2; No. 3, Central Aroostook, 8-7; and No. 4, Fort Fairfield, 8-6.
Rounding out the top 14 girls teams qualifying for playoffs are: No. 6, Stearns, 8-5; No. 7, PVHS, 8-5; No. 8, Machias, 9-4; No. 9, Ashland, 9-7; No. 10, Shead, 8-6; No. 11, Schenck, 7-7; No. 12, Woodland, 5-9; No. 13, Highview Academy, 7-6; and No. 14, Deer Isle-Stonington, 4-7.
Hodgdon finished outside the bracket in 16th with a 2-12 record, while Katahdin finished the season, 5-9, for 17th and Southern Aroostook is 18th with a 1-13 year.
In Class C, Houlton is 11th with a 5-8 record. Class C takes the top 10 teams which are: No. 1, Bucksport, 14-1; No. 2, Mattanawcook Academy, 13-1; No. 3, Calais, 13-1; No. 4, PCHS, 10-2; No. 5, Madawaska, 10-5; No. 6, Dexter, 8-6; No. 7, Central, 7-8; No. 8, Sumner, 8-7; No. 9, George Stevens Academy, 4-10; and No. 10, Orono, 5-9.
Orono will finish their season today with a game against No. 7 Central, while the Houlton girls will have to secure a victory over No. 2 Mattanawcook Academy today at 4:30 p.m. in Lincoln to have a shot at the playoffs.
The preliminary games for softball will be held Tuesday, June 9, with the quarterfinals on Thursday, June 11 and semifinals on Saturday, June 13 at the higher-seeded team’s field. The softball regionals for Class C is set for 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16 in Brewer. The Class C regional site has not been listed.
The Class C state game is at 12 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, in Brewer, while the Class D state final at 4 p.m. at St. Joseph’s College the same day.
To recap the last games, the Houlton girls fell in a close game to Presque Isle on Monday in Houlton, 8-5.
Last Tuesday in Danforth, the collaborative East Grand/GHCA girls softball team edged visiting Machias, 2-1 behind Allie McEwen’s eight strikeouts, while allowing six hits to lead East Grand/GHCA.
At Mars Hill, Central Aroostook overtook EG/GHCA 9-3 after scoring four first-inning runs.
Whitnie Bradbury singled twice and doubled to lead the offense for the Panthers, while Karli Levesque scattered six hits and struck out two.
McEwen had two singles for East Grand/GHCA.
Last Friday in Mars Hill, the Lady Panthers picked up a 13-1 win over Hodgdon.
Kelsey Dominique had three doubles and drove in four runs to lead CAHS, while Jordan Canney added four singles and Bradbury had three singles.
Sidney Crane led Hodgdon with two singles.
Last Wednesday in Washburn, the Beavers blanked the Hawks, 12-0.
For Hodgdon, Rachel Harmon singled.
The Katahdin Lady Cougars have played several games. They have beaten Bangor Christian last Saturday, 6-3 in Bangor and at home, 19-0 last Tuesday. At home to Bangor Christian, coach Harry Doughty said, “Kaycee Cintron was “in the zone”, as she pitched strike after strike.”
Last Saturday, the Southern Aroostook Lady Warriors were defeated 25-2 by host Limestone/MSSM, as , Elly Bencivenga allowed only two hits and struck out 10 to help the Eagles capture their 12th win.
Jessica Nye and Katrina Altmannsberger each had a hit for SACS.
Last Tuesday in Ashland, the SACS girls were overtaken, 24-10.
Marissa Boulier knocked in four runs with a double and a single for SACS, while Cassidy Lyons singled and drove in a run.
