City gives recycling books to library

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine In continuing to develop the city’s new program on recycling education for youth, Dana Fowler, public services director, recently presented six children’s books on recycling to Melissa St. Pierre, children’s librarian at the Mark & Emily Turner Memorial Library.

Two additional books are on back order and will be delivered to the library soon. The books are geared for children from pre-K through fourth grade.
The books will be used in conjunction with the library’s Story Time and may include a special guest appearance by “Garbagette,” the city’s recycling education puppet. Garbagette lives in a garbage can and keeps recyclable objects in her ‘spare tire.’ Kids can pull these items from her tummy and learn the proper means of recycling for each item. In addition to appearances at the library, Garbagette is also available to travel to local classrooms to teach recycling to school-aged children. A set of the same books presented to the library will travel with her.
Another important piece of the city’s recycling education program is the special web page, which includes recycling fact sheets, activity sheets, and a link to an online recycling game. These can be found at http://presqueislemaine.gov/just-for-kids.
The final piece of the recycling education program is still in the works. This piece, a traveling life-sized soda-shaped sign, is meant for slightly older children. The interactive sign will feature fact sheets about recycling.
All of these new recycling education tools were made possible by a grant from the Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust. For more information on recycling or to schedule a visit from Garbagette for your group or classroom, call the city’s Solid Waste Department at 760-2712.
