Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Palmer returned to their home here in Island Falls recently after spending the winter months at their home in Florida, and are just in time to enjoy the swarms of black flies that seem to be at their peak at this time of the year. And Mr. and Mrs. Peter Connelly are at home again after spending a week touring through Nova Scotia, and are now busy anticipating the arrival of their son, who plans to spend the summer here in Island Falls.
Not much activity in the feathered friends department except for the hummingbirds that are very faithful in arriving and drinking their fill of the sugar and water I keep in their feeder. One day, when it was quite cool, I did put out some sunflower seeds and before too long, there were several goldfinch, purple finch and, of course, chickadees busily eating them all. And finally saw a gray squirrel looking longingly at the feeders, but alas, they were all empty, so off he went. Still have the crows appearing every afternoon and perching on the birch tree out back and, so far, the branch they lite on has withstood their weight and has not broken.
I have a pesky ground hog who has been digging a hole near my back flower garden and has made a great pile of dirt there. I keep filling up the hole but he is back in two days and starts all over again. A next-door neighbor who has the same problem so he may trap him and take him off some place. Sure hope so as I am tired of re-filling that hole.
